Hungary has Fallen - By the Rivers of Babylon
As soon as I heard about the overturning of Viktor Orban's party in the Hungarian election today, 12 April, the By The Rivers of Babylon song came back to me and I remember an earlier blog I posted on 25 October 2025.
A few days ago I heard the phrase of a song I heard years ago as I was journaling and quickly looked it up to see what the rest of the lyrics were….
By the rivers of Babylon
There we sat down
Yeah, we wept
When we remembered Zion
By the rivers of Babylon
There we sat down
Yeah, we wept
When we remembered Zion On the rivers of Babylon
To my surprise it was a mournful lament of a lost idyllic life. The Lord then started speaking to me about the parallels of this song and the political turmoil we are living in. "By the Rivers of Babylon" primarily refers to the famous 1978 Boney M. song and the parallel of Psalm 137, which describes Jewish captives in Babylon mourning while longing for their home, Zion. "Babylon" represents an oppressive political or social system, and the phrase symbolises resistance against injustice and a longing for freedom. Psalm 137 describes the people being held captive weeping for their homeland as they are being taunted by their captors.
By the rivers of Babylon we sat and wept when we remembered Zion. Psalm 137:1
We are in very serious times and the word in 2 Chronicles 7:14: "If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves, and pray and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land". More than ever this should be our response.
NOW is the time!
